Milanković’s name is also mentioned in some of the processes at the Hague Tribunal.

Still, the Serb Radical Party - led city authorities see nothing controversial in the decision.

“I read it recently in the newspapers that street names change every couple of years in Serbia, ever since 1945. I never noticed Bora [Novaković, a Democratic Party city councilor] speak up when former Tito’s officials changed the names of streets. New times – new street names, that’s how I see it,” Novi Sad mayor Maja Gojković of the SRS said.

The city assembly opposition, Democrats included, criticized as unacceptable the decision to honor former paramilitary commanders or those mentioned in the Hague trials.

“I believe it is utterly unacceptable for Novi Sad to have a boulevard named in this way. Munich doesn’t have a boulevard named after Adolf Hitler, therefore Novi Sad has no reason to have streets remind people of times and events that represent the town’s, Vojvodina’s, Serbia’s and the region’s darkest hour,” League of Vojvodina’s Social Democrats caucus chief Aleksandar Jovanović said.

The opposition councilors interrupted the assembly’s session when they left in protest.

The decision to rename the streets can only be implemented if the local governance ministry agrees with it.
