Poland shifts position in favor of Ahtisaari’s plan for Kosovo calling on Serbia to face reality and focus on EU integration.

Poland supports Ahtisaari’s plan
Koval accused official Belgrade of taking an obstructive approach to the negotiations with Kosovo Albanians. “We believe that Belgrade’s attempts to thwart Ahtisaari’s efforts do not serve Serbia’s interests. Serbia should accept reality and focus on the activities which will bring it closer to the EU”, Koval said.Koval said that the Polish Government was convinced that peace and stability in the Balkans depended on whether democratic values can take root in Serbia.
“If Belgrade formed an anti-European government, Poland would insist on introducing a rigorous supervision of respect for the rule of law in Serbia in regards to its co-operation with the EU and NATO”, Koval warned.
Koval’s statement represents an abrupt shift in the position of Poland regarding Ahtisaari’s plan for Kosovo, given the complete opposite stance of the Polish President Lech Kaczyñski.
Kaczyñski said at the beginning of February that Kosovo should be granted wide autonomy within Serbian borders. “We don’t want to accept any principle that could cause a domino effect in the countries like Georgia”, the Polish President said at the time.
