Rupel explains Kosovo comments

He also said that the question of Kosovo’s status cannot be separate from the question of Serbia and the region, and that the complete solution calls for the entire region of the Western Balkans to become part of the European Union.

Rupel said that Slovenia will support the results of the Serbia-Kosovo status discussions, and that the discussions will be finished by the end of the year, which is steadily approaching.

First noting that Slovenia does not wish to pre-judge the results of the discussions, Rupel said that “the status of Kosovo will be a status close to independence, whether conditional or limited or in any case, it will be a case where Kosovo will have independence in one form or another.”

He said that the situation should not hurt Serbia in any way, and is asking both sides to look for acceptable forms of independence. In order to find balance, Rupel said that Serbia needs to become a member of the EU, of course, under determined conditions.

Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku will be visiting Slovenia on Thursday on the invitation of Rupel, which he confirmed for B92.
