At the last meeting of the Contact Group, Ahtisaari said that this eventual meeting of Serbian Prime Minister and President Vojislav Kostunica and Boris Tadić with their Kosovo counterparts Agim Ceku and Fatmir Sejdiu must be very well organised.

However, daily Večernje Novosti writes that Ahtisaari will not be able to convince the Serbian leaders to participate in such a meeting. Večernje Novosti’s sources claim that the Serbian officials are looking at these meetings as being rushed and unorganised and some Belgrade diplomats are calling it a “you come in, you go out, it’s over” type of deal, which is destined to be unsuccessful.

The daily also writes that Ahtisaari’s days as special envoy are numbered and that new Kosovo status plans are already being hatched by potential successors.

Serbian Kosovo status delegation member Aleksandar Simić, in an interview with Politika, criticised strongly the work of Ahtisaari’s deputy Albert Roan, stating that he is most responsible for the lack of progress in the status talks thus far.

“I think that he has been doing his job poorly thus far,” Simić said of Roan, adding that he is “unprepared, and misguided” in leading the discussions “which have no rules or records.”

Simić also said that EU senior official Javier Solana told Prime Minister Koštunica back in June that, in his opinion, the “Vienna process is dead.”

He also criticised US ambassador Michael Polt and his recent remarks that Belgrade not accepting Kosovo independence will not help the situation.
