NOVI SAD -- Croatian President Stjepan Mesić said that it would be good for President Boris Tadić to come to Vukovar, as a sign of remembrance.

“It would be good for him to come, I would support that, and it would be also supported by the Croatian citizens. It would be clear proof that the crimes in Vukovar should not have been allowed to happen and that we are opening a new book in our relations,” Mesić said as a guest on RTV Vojvodina.

Days of remembrance are held every year for Vukovar from November 17-21, as reminders of the destruction of the city and the crimes committed by the JNA and members of various paramilitary formations.

Mesić said that he does not understand why there can be no monuments placed at the locations where there were concentration camps set up for Croats in Stajićevo and Begejci near Zrenjanin.

“It is strange to me that these people cannot come to the places where their friends were imprisoned and where they died,” he said.

Mesić said that he hopes that the entire Southeast European region will fight for European standards and remove war as a political option, through constructive policies and European orientation.

“First and foremost, all imperial interest should be wiped clean from some minds, from those who still believe that borders can be changed. The architecture of our region has been completed,” Mesić said.
