Bird flu donations pour in

13 April 2006

The Serbian donators’ convention was able to collect 600,000 euros for the fight against the avian flu.

The donation was given by UNICEF, and the Serbian Government expects that more donations for this cause will be coming its way soon.

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Miroljub Labus, who heads the coordination council for combating the bird flu, said that Serbia needs 28.5 million euros in order to implement all necessary measures for preventing and combating the virus. He said that half of the money will be secured from the budget and the other half will come from various donations.

“So far, we have spent 4.5 million euros for this cause, the Agriculture Ministry spending 1.2 million and 3 million from the Health Ministry. Preventive activity costs a lot. This money was taken from the budget and we intend to use more from the budget, but we are also expecting the financial assistance of donators, maybe around ten million euros worth.” Labus said.
