Sefko Salkovic, described as an activist of the Bosniak electoral coalition Vakat, was murdered in the Kosovo village of Postenje. The incident occurred in the municipality of Leposavic in northern Kosovo. Murdered "activist" was murder suspect Kosovo police, KPS, confirmed these reports, stating that it was a serious criminal incident, but only gave the initials of the victim. The police report states that there was a firearm attack on a Toyota vehicle in which the victim S.S. died immediately, while his co driver, E.I., was severely injured. The driver has been taken to Pristina for treatment. “The circumstances and the possible motives of the attack on the vehicle are unknown,” KPS stated. In Belgrade, Serbian police (MUP) announced that the victim, identified as Sefko Salkovic, was wanted on charges that he had committed murder in the Sandzak town of Novi Pazar. An arrest warrant was issued for Salkovic in 2000, but he remained out of reach of Serbia's police, according to a MUP statement for Beta news agency this Thursday. In Pristina on Wednesday, EULEX chief Xavier de Marnhac strongly condemned the attack and said that EULEX would help the Kosovo police to investigate the incident. “We appeal on all sides in this potentially sensitive period to act responsibly. The use of violence is completely unacceptable,” the EULEX head said. Marnhac said that he truly believed that the KPS will fulfill its tasks related to the investigation, and underscored that EULEX was ready to back KPS and react if necessary, the release read. On Thursday, a KPS spokesman confirmed that both Salkovic and the injured driver were "members of the Leposavic municipality team for the preparation of elections which will be held in Kosovo on Sunday". The elections are organized by the Kosovo Albanian government in Pristina, whose authority is not recognized by Serbs in the predominantly Serb northern part of Kosovo.
