Dodik: "No revolution" over Kosovo

“No one in the RS would start an armed revolution, there will be no violence here and we will prevent any such attempts,” Dodik said.

But no one can stop people from asking questions, Dodik added, explaining that Bosnian Serbs would wonder why ethnic Albanians in Kosovo have the right to independence, and they (Bosnian Serbs) don’t.

In response to growing calls by local Muslims for the abolition of the two entities created by the 1995 Dayton peace accord which ended the civil war - the RS and a Muslim-Croat federation - Dodik has threatened to hold a referendum on independence. He claims this is unconnected to Kosovo's future status.

Kosovo, in which ethnic Albanians outnumber Serbs by 17 to one, has been under United Nations control since 1999, following ethnic fighting and widespread human rights abuses.

Belgrade opposes Kosovo's independence and Serb officials say it would destabilise the entire region and the international community fears Bosnian Serbs might demand independence as well. “I will ask the international community to explain why one ruled applies to Kosovo and another for the RS," Dodik told television in RS capital Banjaluka.

Dodik has repeatly called for the abolition of the office of high representative in Bosnia (OHR), which has safeguarded peace in the country since 1995. He argues the OHR, which has wide arbitrary powers, including sacking of elected politicians is illegitimate and that responsibility for the country turned over to local politicians.

But partly due to fears of a knock-on effect on Bosnian Serbs' calls for independence, the international community has decided to extend the OHR's mandate beyond June, its current chief, Christian Schwarz-Schilling on Thursday told daily Nezavisne novine. OHR staff will however be cut and Schwarz-Schilling, who is considered insufficiently tough, will be replaced.

According to the Dayton peace accord, the entities have no right to secede, but Serbs insist that there are no legal grounds for Kosovo's secession either.
