U.S. Congress backs Macedonia's NATO bid

Specifically, the legislation calls for the timely admission of Albania, Croatia, Georgia, and Macedonia to NATO and authorizes security assistance for these countries in Fiscal Year 2007.

The NATO Freedom Consolidation Act of 2007 aims to endorse further enlargement of NATO and to facilitate the timely admission of new members to NATO.

Democrat Congressman John Tanner tabled the Resolution, saying he believed the countries in question would move in the right direction toward NATO membership.

Addressing the 43rd Munich Conference on Security Policy earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said NATO's eastward expansion was affecting Russia's relationship with the North Atlantic alliance.
