Albania freezes account of Bin Laden associate

The finance ministry said Sunday that it has also frozen bank accounts and seized property belonging to five Islamic charities operating in the country.

Finance Minister Ridvan Bode ordered the action July 5. Six bank accounts were frozen and property was seized in the capital, Tirana, and in the small northern towns of Kukes and Bulqiza.

The ministry didn't say how much money was held in the accounts.

The charities targeted were the Al Haramain Foundation, MediCare, Karavan, Foundation of Life and Science, and Taibah International. A ministry spokeswoman wasn't able to provide any further details.

The businessman, Abdul Latif Saleh, holds Jordanian and Albanian citizenship. He was placed on a United Nations sanctions list that requires all UN members to impose a travel ban on him and block his assets.

Saleh left Albania four years ago, Albanian prosecutors say. American authorities said his last known residence was in the United Arab Emirates.

The US Treasury Department last September ordered American banks to freeze any accounts or other financial assets held by Saleh.

The department alleged that bin Laden provided Saleh with 600,000 dollars to encourage the creation of "extremist groups" in Albania.

Albanian authorities have refused to make public any details about Saleh or say whether they share the same suspicions about his activities.

US authorities say Saleh is believed to be closely associated with groups in Albania that have links to the Egyptian Islamic Jihad.

Saleh founded an Albanian jihadist group that has been bankrolled by the Al Haramain Foundation, an Islamic charity with alleged links to al-Qaida, the Treasury Department said in September.

American authorities alleged that Saleh's Albanian extremist group aimed to destabilize Albania by inciting conflict among different religious groups in the tiny, predominantly Muslim country.

Last year, Albania blocked 33 bank accounts as well as assets and investments in Saleh's businesses and organizations he was involved with.
