A policeman who early on Saturday shot and killed a suspected smuggler has been detained, Tanjug has reported.
The agency cited "sources close to the police" who said the officer is being suspected of murder.
Earlier, the Higher Public Prosecution in Novi Pazar, a town in southwestern Serbia, announced that the victim of the shooting was 22-year-old S.F. from nearby Tutin, and that he died during a police operation aimed at preventing "illegal trade."
The daily Blic reported that it learned unofficially the police raid targeted smugglers of excise goods.
The prosecution's statement also said that an investigation had been launched into whether the use of firearms by the police was justified and lawful, and that the public would be informed of the results "in a timely manner."
