American appointed chief prosecutor of Kosovo crimes court

David Schwendiman has been appointed chief prosecutor of a Hague-based special court to investigate war crimes committed during the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo.

A spokesman of the EU Special Investigative Task Force (SITF) announced in a statement that, on September 1, 2016, Schwendiman, Lead Prosecutor of the SITF, was "appointed Specialist Prosecutor (Chief Prosecutor) of the newly established Kosovo Specialist Prosecutor’s Office (SPO)."

"His appointment marks the formal transition of the SITF into the SPO," the statement said.

Schwendiman has also served as a war crimes prosecutor in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
