Tenants assault, rob landlord, set his apartment on fire

Two men - D.S. from Nis, and A.C. from Smederevska Palanka - have been arrested in Novi Becej, northern Serbia, on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder.

Tenants assault, rob landlord, set his apartment on fire

They struck him several times on the head and elsewhere on the body, stole 100 Swiss francs from his pocket, and then set fire to his apartment.

The police believe the pair then left the apartment, locked the front door behind them, and fled Smederevska Palanka on a train.

The police and firefighters quickly reacted to extinguish the fire and transport the victim who had suffered life-threatening injuries to a Belgrade clinic specializing in treatment of burns and plastic surgery, where the doctors said he suffered third degree burns.

The suspects are currently held in police custody and will be turned over to the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Smederevo.
