80, including ex-minister, arrested on corruption charges

They include a former minister, two assistant ministers, directors of public companies and businessmen, and the damage they had caused was over EUR 100 million.

"Among the arrested are one former minister, two former assistant ministers and a number of presidents of municipalities, directors of public enterprises and businessmen," Stefanovic said.

Stefanovic told a press conference in Belgrade that investigations had been ongoing from 2004 to the present and the operation would continue and "nobody would be spared."

The biggest part of the job was done over the past year, Stefanovic said, adding that most of the fraud offenses had been in connection with construction land.

Former Serbian Agriculture Minister Slobodan Milosavljevic is among those arrested, suspected, along with seven others, of fraud related to agricultural land.

A Higher Court in Belgrade ordered Milosavljevic held for 30 days. It is suspected that from December 2004 through June 2008, the group illegally exchanged agricultural land owned by Maxim&Co marketing company for state-owned land in the construction zone of the City of Novi Sad used by the agricultural cooperative of Novi Sad, the prosecutor's office said on Saturday.

By doing so, Maxim&Co acquired an unlawful material gain of over RSD 1 billion, since the state-owned was worth many times more than the agricultural land that the state received in the exchange, the release said.

Those arrested include a former chief along with the current leader of the Ada Municipality, the former director of the Pionirski Grad Sports and Recreation Center, an official of the Vojvodina Football Club, the owner of the Beohemija company, Zeljko Zunic, former director of the insurance company Dunav Osiguranje Milanka Jezdimirovic and officials from several political parties.
