Novi Sad had "20 murders in two years"

The police managed to solve most of these "liquidation cases," said the newspaper, but noted that the killings have recently become "increasingly cruel" - while the killers are "less and less scrupulous," i.e., are attacking their targets "even in broad daylight, in front of witnesses."

According to the daily, this was once again confirmed by the February 28 killing of Nenad Opacic - a former leader of a crime gang known as the Veternik Clan, and his wife. Both were shot dead in front of the entrance to their home.

Opacic was serving a 15-year prison sentence and was "certainly the target, while it is believed his wife was an accidental victim," the article explained.

An investigation is now underway, exploring three possible directions, including the involvement of persons Opacic was "in conflict with" before he was arrested in 2003 during Operation Saber, "when he was thought to be close with the Zemun Clan."

Other possibilities include "some new narco groups wanting his liquidation before his release from prison in 2018," and a feud with another inmate in the prison in Sremska Mitrovica where he was serving his sentence during the past 12 years.

The newspaper mentions other cases, including the murder of Radenko Popovic, shot from an automatic rifle "in what was very reminiscent of the ambush killings from the early 2000s," and the death of Velibor Vucurovic in a Novi Sad boulevard, with the bullet "most likely accidentally shot from one of the buildings along the boulevard."

The police are still searching for the killer of Ivana Bogicevic who died in her car on February 5 after her assailant, shooting from the trunk of another vehicle that blocked the road, fired some 30 bullets from an automatic rifle.

"It is believed that the target was her husband," writes the daily.
