PRISTINA Leader of the Citizen Initiative (GI) SDP Oliver Ivanovic has been placed in custody for 30 days and was taken to Pristina on Tuesday, his lawyer has said. Nebojsa Vlajic explained that he would appeal against this decision because he considers the reasons given for the detention "baseless," and that he would ask that his client be set free. Kosovo: Ivanovic detained in war crimes case Vlajic said that Ivanovic was accused of most serious crimes, but that the accusations were "ridiculous, invented, and nonsensical." "What Ivanovic is charged of he could not have done and did not do, the motivation for that is outside the law and there is no evidence there. Any one of us can be accused in the way in which Ivanovic has been accused, and for that reason there is no life or legal security for us in Kosovo," Vlajic said. Ivanovic is a suspect in a war crimes investigation, which is ongoing, and in connection to a murder committed after the war in Kosovo. Last night, Vlajic told reporters that his client was facing accusations related to two serious crimes committed in 1999 and 2000, when ethnic Albanians died, and that the charges were "politically motivated." Representatives of Serbs from northern Kosovo, citizens, and councilors from the GI SDP list protested last night. The councilors warned that unless Ivanovic was set free, they would resign from their posts in local municipalities in northern Kosovo. Earlier on Monday, the GI SDP said that their leader was giving a statement to the prosecutor of Kosovo's Special Prosecution Office, and that he was not brought in for questioning, but had responded "as a responsible citizen to EULEX's invitation to provide a statement."
