The Serbian Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor has achieved significant progress in the investigation into Kosovo human organs trafficking. According to Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekaric, the investigation is "one of the priorities in the Office's work". New evidence in organ trafficking probe "The investigation is making progress, and we have obtained new pieces of evidence," he said on Tuesday. Due to the secrecy of the investigation, it is not possible to reveal any concrete data or results, Vekaric said, noting that the most important thing is to shed light on the crimes and determine the truth, primarily because of the victims themselves and their relatives. The Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor is closely cooperating both with EULEX and authorized Russian bodies in efforts to investigate the crimes against Serbs, which are linked to certain senior officials of the ethnic Albanian KLA. The intensive cooperation with Russia is based on the Agreement which Serbian Public Prosecutor Zagorka Dolovac and Russian General Prosecutor Yury Chaika penned in Moscow on January 12. Turkey and Ukraine have also joined the investigation. Former Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte was the first to address the issue in her book published in April 2008. The Serbian War Crimes Prosecution opened an investigation into the allegations that in 1999 and 2000, KLA members kidnapped Serb civilians in Kosovo, illegally imprisoned them in northern Albania, and extracted their vital organs to be sold in the black market. Council of Europe Rapporteur Dick Marty submitted a report on this issue, which later served as basis for a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) resolution. Serbia insists that an investigation should be carried out with a mandate of the United Nations. A separate case involving human organ trafficking in Kosovo, known as the Medicus Case, is related to alleged illegal transplants in a Pristina clinic that took place after the war.
