New trials granted to Zemun gangsters

The Belgrade Special Court for Organized Crime granted on Tuesday a new trial to former member of the Zemun Clan gang Sretko Kalinic. The new trial concerns the murder of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and the criminal acts he committed as member of the criminal group, the Court spokesperson Judge Maja Kovacevic told Tanjug. New trials granted to Zemun gangsters She said that the Court will decide if Kalinic will be tried together with Milos Simovic, another Zemum gangster who was also recently granted a new trial, after which the court will schedule the beginning of the trial. The renewal of proceedings was granted because both offenders were at large for over seven years, it was reported. They were both tried in absentia and sentenced to 30 years in prison each as accomplices in the murder of Djindjic, and another 40 years for a series of murders, kidnappings and other criminal acts committed by the Zemun Clan. Kovacevic said that the proceedings will be repeated only for Simovic and Kalinic. She stressed that the two offenders will be tried separately for the murder of prime minister and for the criminal acts they committed as members of the Zemun gang. Simovic was arrested at the Serbia-Croatia border crossing on June 10, 2010, two days after severely wounding Kalinic in Zagreb, with whom he was hiding for over seven years. Kalinic was arrested in Croatia on June 8, 2010, and extradited to Serbia on August 25.

She said that the Court will decide if Kalinić will be tried together with Miloš Simović, another Zemum gangster who was also recently granted a new trial, after which the court will schedule the beginning of the trial.
