The Budapest prosecutor's office brought charges against former WW2 Hungarian fascist army officer Sandor Kepiro. The 96-year-old is accused of committing war crimes against civilians in occupied Serbia in 1942. Hungarian charged with WW2 war crimes in Serbia According to the prosecutor's office, the indictment charges Kepiro with taking part in a Hungarian operation in Novi Sad in January 1942, known as the Novi Sad Raid. In the raid in the town itself, and in the Sajkacka District of northern Serbia, some 4,000 Jews, Serbs and Romas were rounded up and murdered on January 21-23, 1942. Kepiro is on the Wiesenthal Center's list of most wanted war criminals. The former officer, who has denied the charges, was already sentenced 10 and 14 years in prison, but fled to Argentina after the war and never served his time in jail. He returned to Hungary in 1996. Kepiro is also suspected of taking part in deporting Novi Sad Jews to the Auschwitz death camp in 1944. The Serbian War Crimes Prosecution submitted a request for investigation in 2008 and issued an arrest warrant for Kepiro, but Hungary said its constitution did not allow for extradition of its citizens to other countries.
