The court's decision yesterday came after a hearing before an investigative judge, who assessed the pair could influence witnesses or repeat the offense while the investigation is ongoing, court spokeswoman Dusica Ristic told Tanjug. If found guilty, the surgeons could face two to 12 years in prison each, and have their medical licenses revoked. According to a police statement issued in Belgrade, Savic and Mijalcic "on several occasions, from January 17 until February 4, asked for money from a patient in order to perform the necessary surgical procedure". On Monday, the patient's husband, who previously reported the case to the police, gave them EUR 3,000 in marked bills, after which the suspects were arrested. (Beta)
