Doctors accused of taking bribes detained

The Clinical Center of Serbia (KCS) announced that two of its doctors were detained by police on Monday morning. They are suspected of taking bribes. Doctors accused of taking bribes detained "The suspects are under investigation and in order for it to be conducted without impediment, we will not give any information," said the Belgrade-based healthcare institution. The clinic's management, however, said in a statement that it "strongly c ondemned all forms of bribery and corruption", as well as that "insured patients are not charged for any service, nor is it allowed to ask patients to buy their own medication or medical material". Belgrade-based media, in the meantime, identify the pair now under arrest as Radovan Mijalcic and Dragana Savic. The two neurosurgeons are accused of requesting bribes of EUR 6,000 in order to operate on a 45-year-old woman suffering from aneurysm, even though the patient's expenses were covered by her health insurance and she had been properly referred to the clinic by her doctors.
