EULEX indicts war crimes suspects

EULEX Spokeswoman Irina Gudeljevic says that the EULEX prosecutor has confirmed the indictment against former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). Sabit Geci and Riza Alija are charged with war crimes committed in 1999. EULEX indicts war crimes suspects “On November 24, 2010, the EULEX judge of the District Court in Kosovska Mitrovica confirmed the 1999 war crimes indictment against Sabit Geci and Riza Alija,” Gudeljevicc told Tanjug and added that the indictment was brought by the Kosovo Special Prosecution on August 6, 2010. “Several counts of the indictment charge Sabit Geci with war crimes committed in two KLA facilities, in Kukes and Cahan, north-eastern Albania, where civilian Kosovo Albanians were held imprisoned in inhumane conditions and were subjected to torture and beatings,” she stressed. She pointed out that the indictment noted that one of the prisoners had died as a result of the abuse. The EULEX spokeswoman underscored that both indictees were placed in detention, while the third suspect was still at large. The Pristina media reported on Saturday that the charges were raised by EULEX prosecutor, Robert Dean of the U.S., but the exact date of the trial against Geci and Alija was not specified. According to the media, the KLA used several camps in Kukes and Cahan for logistics and training, while some of them were used as prison camps for captured civilians. According to the indictment which the Pristina media had a chance to review, in its camps in Albania the KLA held imprisoned Albanian civilians who were suspected of cooperating with the Serbian regime or whose political stands differed from those upheld by the KLA.
