Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic has stated that the most powerful criminal organizations in Serbia are currently at war. “These organizations have been involved in drug and cigarette trafficking, as well as murders and money laundering, which was done through offshore companies and then used to buy government companies in Serbia,” he told daily Blic. Criminal groups at war, police director says “The police have studied those groups' operations, learned about their finances and stopped them from influencing parts of the government,” the police director pointed out. "Every criminal with money wants power. If you have money, but no power, you have a problem. That is why the leaders of criminal organizations are currently at war, because they are unable to pick their own people for government positions and influence the work of the country's institutions," Veljovic was quoted as saying. “The Serbian police and Interpol have agreed for the first time to conduct joint operations against organized crime, especially when it comes to drug trafficking, he remarked. According to Veljovic, the Serbian police play a very important role in that cooperation. “The participants of the meeting at the Interpol headquarters commended the work of the Serbian police and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic,” the police director added. “The country and President Boris Tadic were described as the leaders in the combat against organized crime in the Balkans,” he stressed.
