Deputy Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekaric saya that the inability of Serbia to arrest fugitive Ratko Mladic costs Serbia more than EUR 1bn a year. This money is lost investments and EU access funds, he explained. "Mladic costs Serbia EUR 1bn each year" This means that every citizen in Serbia is losing about EUR 160 on average every month because Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic are still at large, Vekaric told Reuters. Vekaric pointed to a very slow pace of the privatization processes, Serbia's limited access to EU funds and low foreign investment inflow as direct results of the Hague indictees remaining at large. Investors first want to be informed about the country's progress on its path towards the EU, Vekaric pointed out, adding that it has thus far been a key parameter for calculating the figure of EUR one billion of annual damage for Serbia. Vekaric pointed out that the state is currently allocating money for some 10,000 operatives who are searching for Mladic every day, which on annual level almost equals the reward offered for the information on the Hague fugitives. Last month, the Serbian government increased the reward for information that would lead to the arrest of Mladic to EUR 10mn and to EUR 500,000 for information on Goran Hadzic.
