A Zagreb court has placed Sretko Kalinic in month-long custody, investigating judge KreSimir Devcic told Beta news agency. Kalinic is one of the Zemun Clan crime group members who was tried in absentia in Serbia and convicted convicted for the 2003 assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. Zemun Clan member in custody The judge explained that he placed Kalinic in detention because he had been found to hold two forged passports. "Kalinic will be taken into custody in Remetinac, i.e. to the prison hospital, during the day," Devcic told Beta. The judge added that he questioned Kalinic at Zagreb's Sisters of Mercy Hospital on June 24, where Kalinic had been placed after being wounded two weeks ago. "He has been placed in custody due to the danger of escape and the possibility of the crime being repeated," Devcic stressed. Another convict in the Djindjic murder case, Milos Simovic, allegedly shot Kalinic in Zagreb on June 8. Simovic was arrested two days later while trying to illegally cross the Serbian-Croatian border and is currently jailed in Serbia. Both were given sentences of 30 years for their role in the Djindjic assassination, and 40 more years in a separate case.
