Today marks the 9 anniversary of the murder of journalist Milan Pantic, whose killer still has not been identified and brought to justice. The Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia (NUNS) and the Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) have on the occasion expressed their dissatisfaction over the inefficient work of investigative bodies, especially police and prosecution. Nine years on, journalist killer still at large NUNS Deputy President Vukasin Obradovic says that unsolved murders of journalists Dada Vujasinovic, Slavko Curuvija and Milan Pantic show that authorities do not see journalism as a pillar of democracy but as means for manipulation. “I think that we are, consciously or unconsciously, with all these anniversaries participating in the manipulation, not trying to start some more serious action which would finally give us answers as to whether journalists can be killed in this country with killers remaining unknown.” “I'm afraid that these three examples, as long as they are not solved, will be a symbol of the relation of the political elite toward the media, journalism and the public,“ he said. Pantic, a correspondent of Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti, was killed on June 11, 2001 in front of his apartment building. He received a strong blow to the back of the head with a blunt object. The killer and conspirators have not been found although police questioned about 2,000 people while investigating the case. Former Interior Minister Dragan Jocic stated upon taking the office in 2004 that according to police reports, the journalist was “not supposed to be killed, just intimidated”. The public learned nothing else about the case beside this statement.
