Justice Ministry official Slobodan Homen says Serbia "earns EUR 12,000 a month" renting apartments and offices temporarily seized from organized crime suspects. The state secretary also announced new forfeitures of this kind in the coming days. Police to seize illegal property "The money will be used to help soup kitchens," Homen told the Monday edition of the daily Politika, and added that part of the real estate has already been turned over to state bodies for temporary use. Homen said that the police seized a large number of properties across Serbia owned by narcotics trafficker Darko Saric, as well as the company Jedinistvo from Gajdobra near Backa Palanka, northwestern Serbia. The investigation into the company's finances has uncovered clear ties to companies operated by Saric's smuggling ring, he noted. The state secretary said that following the permanent appropriation of the plot in Silerova Street in Zemun, a decision is pending on the seizure of Milorad Ulemek aka Legija's house in Belgrade. "That house will remain property of the state, because finding a buyer is unlikely. It would not be easy for anyone to buy it because of possible problems," Homen said. He added that over 100 vehicles have been impounded so far, some of which will be used by the police and prosecution, while many will be sold.
