The U.S. embassy in Belgrade has expressed concern that no one has been convicted for the murders of American citizens Agron, Ylli and Mehmet Bitiqi in 1999. “We understand that the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor plans to appeal the acquittals that were announced on September 22. We hope that prosecutors will aggressively pursue any leads on this case,” the American Embassy stated. The Bytyqi brothers, American citizens of Albanian origin, were members of the Kosovo Liberation Army's Atlantic Brigade. Sreten Popovic and Milos Stojanovic, former police officers, were acquitted on Tuesday on charges that they denied the brothers their right to a legal trial and helped unknown members of the Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) kill them. The Serbian War Crime Prosecution has expressed its dissatisfaction with the acquittal and announced that it will lodge an appeal to the Supreme Court.
