The president of the Association of Displaced Roma from Kosovo has been accused of abuse of office and ripping needy Romas off to the tune of EUR 3,500. According to a police statement, Enver Kovaci was arrested yesterday. He is suspected of taking money from Roma living in the Stari Buvljak and Gazela communities by promising to move them from those locations for anywhere between RSD 500 and EUR 150, assuring them that they could receive damages from the state of between EUR 3,000 to 3,500. Roma association president accused of fraud Kovaci convinced those living in these makeshift communities that for EUR 100-200 he would get them health insurance, and that for RSD 1,000 per household, they would be able to connect to the neighborhood electricity network legally. It was added that he sold Association membership cards to people not displaced from Kosovo, promising them a roof over their heads and financial compensation. When city inspectors ordered the demolition of 28 makeshift homes in the New Belgrade community in early April, Kovaci spoke to journalists on behalf of these Roma. Some residents of Block 67 in New Belgrade accused him of owning ten huts in the community, charging EUR 30-50 apiece, and electricity up to RSD 1,000-1,500, which he denies. Kovaci was also accused of fraud by Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas.
