The Special Court has remanded crime boss Sreten Jocic in custody for one month on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a Croatian journalist. Jocic was questioned last night at the request of the Special Prosecution for Organized Crime, which called for him to be remanded in custody and an investigation to be launched against him, because of suspicions that he ordered the murder of daily Nacional owner Ivo Pukanic. Crime boss remanded in month's custody Jocic’s lawyer Zdenko Tomanovic said that his client had been taken into for questioning at about 19:00 CET last night. The investigative judge will later decide on the prosecution’s application for an investigation. Croatian media are speculating that Jocic is not the only one linked to Pukanic’s murder, touting the name of another notorious figure of the Serbian criminal underground, Stanko Subotic. Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said that Jocic had been arrested in a joint operation between the Serbian and Croatian police, but would not say yet whether any new arrests could be expected. Croatian dailies say that the protected witness who fingered Jocic in the murder, mentioned other names as well. Jutarnji List states that Subotic, a controversial businessman, was at the top of a pyramid of people believed to be behind the murder. The daily’s journalist Drago Hedl told B92 that it was very important for cooperation between Serbian and Croatian police to continue. Tomanovic claimed that the deadline for questioning Jocic expired at about 15:00 yesterday, when his 48-hour custody period expired, and that his rights had been violated when taken into for questioning several hours later. However, the police and prosecution were going by a different time frame, giving them until the evening to bring Jocic before the judge. Both the Croatian and Serbian courts have stated that there is no legal way to have Jocic extradited to Croatia if charges are eventually pressed against him. Sreten Jocic (B92, archive)
