The trial of those accused of war crimes in Suva Reka, Kosovo, in 1999, resumes today before the Belgrade District Court. The trial will resume with the closing statements of the defense counsels and seven defendants accused of the murders of 48 Albanian civilians. Suva Reka war crimes trial to resume Yesterday, the defense counsels of five of the accused called for the acquittal of their clients during their closing statements. The trial began on October 3, 2006, and over 100 witnesses have testified. The defendants include former police unit commander Radoslav Mitrovic, Suva Reka Police Chief Radojko Repanovic and his deputy Nenad Jovanovic, police officers Sladjan Cukaric, Miroslav Petkovic, Zoran Petkovic and State Security operative Milorad Nisavic They are accused of killing several older members of the Berisha family, before escorting the remaining men, women and children to a nearby pizzeria, into which they then proceeded to throw two hand grenades, before also shooting dead a 100-year-old woman. While dragging the corpses out of the pizzeria, the accused are then said to have shot anyone showing any signs of life. Later, they are also believed to have summarily executed Jashar Berisha and Abdulah Elshani. In his closing statement, Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Mioljub Vitorovic called for the seven suspects to be found guilty, stating that the proof of their guilt was conclusive.
