Serbian Police (MUP) Directorate chief Milorad Veljovic today gave some details about the weekend's organized crime swoop in Valjevo, western Serbia. Veljovic said that the leader of a criminal group arrested by MUP Criminal Investigations Police (KP) and Gendarmerie (Zandarmerija) officers is Milan Lazarevic, also known as Laza Bombas (Laza the Bomber). Veljovic said that Lazarevic had spent seven years in jail for committing various felonies. A policeman arrested along with the criminal group did not pull the trigger on Djedovic, as the media initially reported: he is suspected of handing over his uniform to Lazarevic, who then gave it to the shooter, identified as Zoran Jelicic, of Padinska Skela, near Belgrade. Jelicic was wearing the MUP uniform as he shot and killed Djedovic, said the Police Directorate chief while visiting Valjevo today. The western Serbian town has been plagued with crime in recent months, including a string of ambush killings. Veljovic sought to reassure the residents when he said that police would continue to investigate all the crimes committed in the area in the past year. He also asked that citizens have faith in police, and said their safety would not be compromised. "Every citizen of Valjevo and Serbia will be protected to the fullest," said Veljovic. "Sending in Belgrade's Criminal Investigations Police and Gendarmerie is a signal that no criminal group in Valjevo, or in any other city in Serbia, will be allowed to terrorize residents." Veljovic also said that the arrest operation came as the local district prosecutor and the country's special organized crime prosecutor cooperated on the case.
