The War Crimes Prosecution has appealed against the five-year sentence handed to former Scorpions paramilitary Aleksandar Medic. Medic was convicted of complicity in the murder of six Muslim civilians in Trnovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, in July 1995. Prosecution appeals Scorpions’ verdict The prosecution is asking for a longer sentence for Medic, stating that “the sentence is on the border of the legal minimum, which cannot achieve the purpose of either special or general prevention.” According to the prosecution, the court did not take into consideration the gravity of the crime, as, of the six victims, three were minors. The prosecution added that the court had not taken into consideration the circumstances in which the crime was perpetrated—namely, the Scorpions beat and degraded the victims before killing them, not allowing them to drink water. It adds that the fact that Medic showed remorse cannot affect the sentence because he did not admit his guilt, claiming that he had only shown remorse in order to receive a more lenient sentence. Scorpions commander Slobodan Medic was sentenced to 20 years for ordering the killings in Trnovo, while the two direct executioners, Branislav Medic and Pera Petrasevic, were sentenced to 15 and 13 years respectively.
