The Hague Tribunal has asked the U.S. to – if they have them – send the documents related to Richard Holbrooke's 1996 meeting with Slobodan Milosevic. The decision means that the war crimes court has accepted a request filed by former Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic's defense. Hague wants Holbrooke-Milosevic documents Karadzic, detained at the tribunal, wants all the information related to the meeting of the former Yugoslav and Serbian leader and the former American Balkan envoy, held in mid July 1996. Karadzic also demanded that his defense attorney Peter Robinson be enabled to speak to Ambassador Philip Goldberg, who was present at the Milosevic-Holbrooke meeting. Karadzic, accused by the Hague prosecution of war crimes and genocide for his role in the 1992-95 war in Bosnia, claims that it was at this meeting that Holbrooke provided guarantees that he would not be arrested and extradited if he agrees to step down from politics and withdraws from public life. Karadzic was arrested 12 years later in Belgrade. In a meeting held on Feb. 4 in The Hague, a United States representative said that Washington was willing to meet Karadzic's demands, but only under the condition that the documents not be used outside the courtroom. There would also be a ban on their publication without a State Department permission. With the court's decision today, the U.S. authorities are obligated to send their response within the next two weeks.
