Investigators believe that Milorad Ulemek, a.k.a. Legija, last week planned to escape from the District Prison in Belgrade, daily Blic writes. Ulemek is serving several prison terms, including the 40 years handed down when he was found guilty of organizing the 2003 murder of Zoran Djindjic. Daily: Ulemek planned escape Now the daily says that he likely feigned extremely poor health and demanded to be transferred to the military clinic VMA. When guards searched his cell, they found a plastic replica of a 9mm pistol, according to the newspaper. A source also told Blic that although Ulemek was examined by the prison doctors who decided to send him to the VMA, a decision was made "not to take him out of the prison at any cost". According to this article, his escape was planned for the night of Feb. 9-10. The decision not to send Ulemek, suffering from high blood pressure, to the clinic was made when prison authorities contacted Justice Minister Snezana Malovic, writes the daily. Instead, VMA doctors were sent to examine the prisoner inside the jail. A six-member VMA team found that Ulemek was indeed suffering from high blood pressure. Blic further says that "one of the possible reasons for his condition could be the influence of a chemical he deliberately took", and adds that "a suspicious vehicle" was spotted near the VMA the same night. A Ministry of Justice statement issued this Monday confirms that Ulemek's transfer to the VMA was prevented after being deemed highly risky.
