EP: July 11 to be Srebrenica remembrance day

The European Parliament named July 11 as day of remembrance for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, where Bosnian Serb forces murdered over 8,000 Muslim civilians.

The European Parliament named July 11 as day of remembrance for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, where Bosnian Serb forces murdered over 8,000 Muslim civilians. The initiative was supported by the European Commission and adopted today with 556 votes for, nine against, and 22 abstentions. EP: July 11 to be Srebrenica remembrance day The EP called on the 27 EU member-states and the EC to support the parliament’s decision. “Proclaiming July 11 as a day of remembrance for the Srebrenica genocide should be a step in the right direction for reconciliation in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the region,” European Commissioner for Foreign Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner said in support of the initiative. MEPs also called for extra efforts to be made in order to bring those responsible for the genocide to justice. Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic is accused of genocide in Srebrenica and is currently on the run from the Hague Tribunal, while then Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic was arrested and extradited to the Hague in July.
