One of the ten members of the so-called Gnjilane Group arrested for war crimes in Gnjilane in 1999 was released from custody in Presevo yesterday. Muhamed Nuhiu, who was arrested on December 26 in Presevo during the operation to apprehend the former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, was released on bail of EUR 7,000. Gnjilane KLA suspect released on bail The investigative judge in Presevo, Mesud Mahmuti, confirmed that Nuhiu, who was the only one of the ten suspects to remain in the custody of the local municipal court, would be released on bail. Nuhiu is accused of illegal possession of firearms and explosive material, while a handgun and grenade were also discovered on his person during his arrest. The District Court in Belgrade yesterday turned down appeals from legal representatives of the other nine suspects in its custody. The members of the Gnjilane Group are suspected of the abduction and murder of over 50 civilians in the region between June and October 1999. They are believed to have ordered and carried out the illegal imprisonment, rape, torture, mutilation and murder of predominantly Serb and non-Albanian civilians. Alongside Nuhiu. the other nine suspects in the case are Nazif Hasani, Ahmet Hasani, Muhamed Nuhiu, Faton Hajdari, Samet Hajdari, Ferat Hajdari, Kamber Sahiti, Agus Memisi, Burim Gazliju and Selimon Sadiki. After their arrest, they were immediately transferred to Belgrade where, after questioning, they were remanded in custody for a month by the investigative judge and an investigation against them was ordered.

The investigative judge in Preševo, Mesud Mahmuti, confirmed that Nuhiu, who was the only one of the ten suspects to remain in the custody of the local municipal court, would be released on bail.

Nuhiu is accused of illegal possession of firearms and explosive material, while a handgun and grenade were also discovered on his person during his arrest.

The District Court in Belgrade yesterday turned down appeals from legal representatives of the other nine suspects in its custody.

The members of the Gnjilane Group are suspected of the abduction and murder of over 50 civilians in the region between June and October 1999.
