Eyewitnesses in a fight in which Miladin Kovacevic allegedly seriously injured fellow student Bryan Steinhauer will not testify tomorrow. Secretary in the Second Municipal Court in Belgradfe Nada Djordjevic told Tanjug that the court did not have any information from the called witnesses and whether they would agree to testify in the case, either in person or via a video link from the United States. No U.S. witnesses in Kovacevic trial If there is no information from the witnesses tomorrow, the investigative judge will schedule a new date for the hearing. Kovacevic’s custody was extended last week for another month because of fear that he may flee. His lawyers have appealed the extended custody because they believe it is unfounded, since an Interpol warrant is out for the arrest of their client and he has nowhere to go. Kovacevic is accused of brutally assaulting Steinhauer in a bar in the United States, where he attended college, and for abetting abuse of office and forging of documents, when Serbian consulate officials in New York issued him with temporary documents that allowed him to jump bail and return to Serbia. He was arrested, along with former Serbian consul in New York Slobodan Nenadovic, on October 28, but the diplomat was released from custody after 16 days. The U.S. Justice Department sent documents regarding the Kovacevic case to the Serbian Public Prosecution in early October, but U.S. officials insist that Kovacevic return to America to stand trial. The Second Municipal Court began an investigation into the case against Kovacevic and former consulate workers who were instrumental in his escape to Serbia. The probe ended in late October. The Serbian prosecution than filed charges against Kovacevic on its own initiative, even though there is an ongoing case in America, because Serbia does not extradite her citizens to other countries.
