The state of Serbia is filing charges against the family of Slobodan Milosevic for the illegal purchase of the family villa in the Belgrade suburb of Dedinje. According to daily Blic, the main hearing is scheduled for December 17 at the Second District Court in Belgrade. State takes Milosevic family to court Milosevic’s wife Mira, son Marko and daughter Marija will not be present at the hearing. Nor will they need to be present for the resumption of the trial, having already appointed lawyers to represent them in court. Mira Markovic and Marko Milosevic, who gained asylum in Russia in January 2008 on the grounds of political persecution by the Serbian government, will be represented by lawyer Moma Raicevic, while Marija Milosevic, who has been living in Montenegro since her late father was extradited to The Hague, will be represented by Svetislav Stevanovic. The procedure to confirm Slobodan Milosevic’s legal successor was wrapped up recently, after a long-running process, because it was not known at what address Mira Markovic and Marko Milosevic were hiding. The procedure was initiated by Milan Markovic, the republic public defender, since Milosevic’s family had not launched any inheritance proceedings. Slobodan Milosevic bought the home in the Belgrade suburb of Dedinje directly before the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, for about DM 2,000. Mira Markovic (FoNet, archive)
