The Hague Tribunal has turned down Gen. Dragoljub Ojdanic's application for temporary release on health grounds, the Tribunal stated earlier today. The Yugoslav Army (VJ) general is accused of crimes committed in Kosovo in 1999. Hague rejects Ojdanic release application The Trial Chamber, presided by Iain Bonomy, ruled yesterday that General Ojdanic had not provided the court with “serious and convincing” evidence to justify his release. The court stated that it had taken into consideration both the Serbian government’s guarantees, as well as Ojdanic’s medical report, drafted by doctors at the Tribunal’s detention unit. The prosecution objected to Ojdanic’s release, insisting that if temporary release was authorized, the Trial Chamber should order electronic 24-hour surveillance of the former VJ General. Earlier this year, in May and June, the Tribunal granted Ojdanic temporary release on health grounds. Ojdanic is, along with former Yugoslav Deputy Prime Minister Nikola Sainovic, former Serbian President Milan Milutinovic and VJ and police generals Nebojsa Pavkovic, Vladimir Lazarevic and Sreten Lukic Ojdanic, accused of war crimes during the conflict in Kosovo in 1999. Sainovic has been granted temporary release to Serbia on compassionate grounds until tomorrow. Sainovic’s release is subject to a number of specific conditions, including 24-hour surveillance by the Serbian authorities.
