The trial of the Scorpions paramilitaries resumes today in front of the War Crimes Chamber of Belgrade’s District Court. Defendants Zeljko Djukic, Dragan Medic, Dragan Borojevic and Miodrag Solaja are charged with shooting at the civilians – 19 women and children among them – in the front yard of the Gashi household in Podujevo on March 28, 1999. Scorpions trial set to continue The unit was taking part in the Kosovo war within the Serbian Interior Ministry, MUP, forces. Five children survived the massacre when 14 people were killed, women and children being among the victims. After learning about the fatal incident, MUP Podujevo command ordered the Scorpions to leave Kosovo. Sasa Cvijetin who was a member of the unit, was in 2005 sentenced to 20 years in prison on the same charges. Five other members were also tried for the Trnovo crime. Unit’s Commander Slobodan Medic was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while Pera Petrasevic was received a 13-year sentence. The Supreme Court reduced Branislav Medic’s jail term from 20 to 15 years, and confirmed the first instance verdict that cleared Aleksandar Vukov of all charges. The same court also cancelled the first instance verdict that sentenced Aleksandar Medic to five years in prison, and ordered a retrial.
