Today marks nine years since the murder of the four SPO officials on Ibarska highway. In the staged accident on October 3, 1999, Veselin Boskovic, Zvonko Osmajlic, Dragan Vusurevic and Vucko Rakocevic were murdered, while Serb Renewal Movement (SPO) leader Vuk Draskovic was injured. 9th anniversary of Ibarska murders "Nine years after the Ibarska crime, there is still no final court verdict, but I hope that there soon will be one. The fact that there is no verdict best demonstrates the fact that the battle against all the cells of the terror regime of Slobodan Milosevic has yet to be won,” Draskovic said after a memorial service. Draskovic pointed out that those cells were scattered throughout the judicial system, the prosecution, parliament and in the media that glorified crimes and criminals. He added that Serbia was “far from moral recovery” and that “without the spiritual recovery of the people and condemning crime and the criminals, all efforts to turn ourselves into a civilized European nation are pointless.” He said that those who supported the Milosevic terror regime “are still on the payroll. That cancer has yet to be removed,” Draskovic said. The verdict for the Ibarska crime was delivered by the Supreme Court after three first instance trials. The Supreme Court decided to try the case itself, for only the second time in this institution’s 161-year history. On June 19, the Supreme Court sentenced former State Security (DB) Chief Radomir Markovic, former Special Operations Unit (JSO) commander Milorad Ulemek, and JSO members Nenad Ilic and Branko Bercek to 40 years in prison. Those convicted of first-degree murder have the right to appeal, while for the others, the verdict is final. JSO member Nenad Bujosevic was sentenced to 35 years in prison, while Dusko Maricic and Leonid Milivojevic received 30 years. Former Federal Customs Chief Mihalj Kertes was sentenced to 18 months in prison for aiding and abetting the perpetrators after the murders. Former Traffic Police Chief Dragiisa Dinic was sentenced to 10 months in prison, while former Belgrade Traffic Police Chief Vidan Mijailovic received six months. Former Chief of DB Belgrade Milan Radonjic and former Belgrade Police Chief Branko Djuric were cleared of all charges, because of a lack of evidence.
