“Construction Mafia” appears in court

Zrenjanin Mayor Goran Knezenic and the rest of the so-called “Construction Mafia” will appear before the Special Court today. Knezenic’s lawyer Vicentije Darijevic confirmed that his client would be questioned today. “Construction Mafia” appears in court The mayor is expected to deny the charges, as he did when questioned by the Zrenjanin police. However, one of the other accused in the corruption scandal, Nikola Halas, has admitted accepting a bribe, daily Blic writes. Blic adds that Halas, head of the Urbanism Department in Zrenjanin, admitted taking EUR 10,000 from investor Bojan Selimovic in exchange for a parcel of land where a petrol station was built illegally. The daily states that part of that money was found at Halas’s home. He stated that Knezenic was told of the money as soon as the deal was made, and directly accused the mayor of being party to corruption. Knezenic, believed to be head of a criminal group, is accused of abuse of office, counterfeiting documents, accepting and giving bribes, and embezzling around EUR 3.5mn.
