The Second District Court in Belgrade has remanded former Serbian Vice-Consul to New York Igor Milosevic in custody for a further month. Milosevic’s custody period was extended because of the possibility that he might try to influence witnesses who have yet to give statements, said Court Secretary Nada Djordjevic. Vice-consul remanded in custody Two more witnesses in the investigation, Jelena Djordjevic and Milovan Bajicevic, both employees at the New York consulate, are still to be questioned. Milosevic was arrested on September 2 on charges of abuse of office having issued a temporary passport to fugitive student Miladin Kovacevic, whose documents had been confiscated by the U.S. authorities. Former General Consul to New York Slobodan Nenadic, Miladin Kovacevic and Kovacevic’s parents were questioned by the investigative judge in the case last month. Milosevic has been charged with abuse of office on suspicion that he forged official documentation. The Foreign Ministry launched disciplinary proceedings against Milosevic in June, when he was suspended from his post. A red Interpol warrant was issued for Kovacevic’s arrest on suspicion that the Serbian student assaulted classmate Bryan Steinhauer in a pub brawl at Binghamton University on May 4, an attack that left Steinhauer in a coma for several months. Kovacevic was subsequently arrested, before being released on bail of USD 100,000, while his documents were confiscated. On leaving prison, he is believed to have obtained the falsified travel documents from Milosevic at the Serbian consulate and fled the country.
