Police have thwarted a plot to liberate Milorad Ulemek from Belgrade’s Central Prison, writes daily Vecernje Novosti. According to the daily, a criminal group led by L.B. was to be paid EUR 2mn to carry out an armed ambush on a column of vehicles transferring the former Special Operations Unit (JSO) leader from Central Prison to the Special Court. V.M. from Montenegro, himself a former JSO officer, was tasked with planning Ulemek’s getaway. In planning the mission, V.M. sought the help of a certain L.B. ,a former member of Arkan’s Serb Volunteer Guard. Despite not having any material evidence of what was being prepared, and working only on hearsay, the police reacted and took L.B. into custody, charging him with illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, after finding in his flat explosives, weapons, overalls, and caps.
