The Meshihat of the Sandzak Islamic Community said that the Bor mosque in Novi Pazar was attacked last night. The Meshihat stated that a group of people threw rocks at the mosque, while shots were also allegedly fired later. Novi Pazar mosque comes under attack According to the statement from this organization, around 01:30 CET the mosque, built in the 16th century, was being guarded by two worshipper. There were no injuries and the incident was reported to the police, who are currently investigating. Longtime imam at the mosque Nezir Salihovic said that “this is not the first attempted takeover of the mosque, but is the most drastic, because now it is a case of attempted murder of the guards of the place of worship”. “We expect the authorities to urgently react and finally stop the violence which is permanently directed against the officials and faithful of the Islamic Community of Serbia and all citizens generally,” the statement concludes. Serbia's Muslims have split into two factions, where the Islamic Community of Serbia is led by Adem Zilkic, while the Islamic Community in Serbia is headed by Muamer Zukorlic. Their followers frequently engage in scuffles and incidents, particularly over disputed religious structures in the Sandzak region.
