Russia has launched a scathing attack on the Hague’s decision to acquit Naser Oric, and has called for the court to be closed. Moscow believes that the Tribunal has once again showed its bias, and that it has effectively carried out political orders. Russia calls for Hague closure “The recent ruling by the Hague over Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz’s appeal in the case of Bosniak war criminal Naser Oric caused disbelief in Moscow,“ reads a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry. The statement adds that during the conflict in Bosnia-Hercegovina between 1992 and 1995, Oric organized the murders of some 3,000 Serb civilians in the Srebrenica region. The ministry said that not only had the Tribunal failed to increase the “unprecedently meagre sentence“ handed out in summer 2006, but had, on the contrary, completely overturned it. “That ruling is yet more proof of the absence of impartiality in the Tribunal’s work, a display of the biased attitude towards certain defendants, condescension towards other actors in the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, and a substitute for justice in carrying out political orders,“ the statement continues. The ministry believes that the Tribunal’s judgment merely confirms the need for its closure forthwith. “Another cause for confusion is the fact that the Office of the High Representative, directly involved in the reconciliation process over Srebrenica, has remained silent on this occasion. And that, despite the fact that Oric did not turn himself in voluntarily, but was arrested and extradited to the Tribunal,“ concludes the statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
