Jovica Stanisic will remain in custody at the Hague Tribunal after his application for temporary release was rejected. In late May, the trial chamber’s ruling that Stanisic could go to Belgrade to receive treatment for health problems was overturned immediately after an appeal from the prosecution. The appeals chamber rejected the application, however, stating that available conditions already existed for treating the suspect within the confines of the Hague Tribunal. Stanisic, the former state security chief and his deputy Franko Simatovic are accused of committing war crimes in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1991 and 1995. According to Hague doctors, he is suffering from severe depression and chronic digestive problems, along with kidney stones Stanisic and Simatovic’s trial began on April 28 with the former absent from the courtroom because of health problems. He also refused to follow the trial via video link from his cell. The trial chamber decided to adjourn the trial for at least three months because of the defendant’s health. The trial is expect to continue once Stanisic’s health improves enough for him to attend.
