Libel verdict against Belgrade daily upheld

The verdict against Pravda Press and the daily's editor has come into force, former Govt. Press Office Chief Vladimir Popovic’s legal representatives claim. In a statement, the Pavicevic law firm said the verdict outlawed the attacks on Popovic’s character. Libel verdict against Belgrade daily upheld According to the same verdict, as delivered by the Second Municipal Court and upheld by the Belgrade District Court, Pravda Press and Predrag Popovic must pay the former press office chief during Zoran Djindjic’s reign as prime minister, a total of EUR 3,100 in damages. They have also been ordered to pay court costs. Under the law, the losing side is obliged to pay Popovic in full within 15 days of the verdict’s confirmation. The statement reiterated that the case concerned an article printed in Pravda entitled, “Vladimir Popovic and Cedomir Jovanovic’s Political Sunsets—Prison Awaits”, which contained a string of unproven allegations and libelous claims at Popovic’s expense. The article alleged that he had been involved in the abductions of Delta owner Miroslav Miskovic and former Serbian FA Vice-President Milija Babovic.
