"Cannabis monk" confesses to drug possession

A monk who was recently arrested for drug trafficking has admitted to some of the charges yesterday. The 33-year old Branislav Stamenkovic, a member of the Uvac monastery brotherhood, told an investigative judge in Cacak that he did plant cannabis seeds in March last year, close to the Holy Trinity monastery at the foot of Mt. Ovcar. "Cannabis monk" confesses to drug possession In October, the plants yielded some 300 grams of marijuana. Additionally, in April the same year, he bought 600 trodon tablets from an unidentified dealer in Leskovac. The medicine is a narcotic analgesic widely abused by drug users, the Blic daily reports today. Stamenkovic, whose monastic name is Jovan, joined the Uvac monastery in 2003, after acquiring a police rap sheet that included charges of theft and forgery. Although he admitted to the possession of drugs, Stamenkovic insisted that they were "for his personal use only." He has been remanded in custody for another 30 days.
